Stakeholder Coverage Risk Map for Fractional Consultants

Find out whether your renewal depends on one relationship, misses a decision-maker, or lacks the right evidence for the people who must support it.

One engagement

Map renewal coverage

Stakeholder count is not coverage. A renewal needs decision authority, sponsorship, operational advocacy, and a workable commercial path.

Who carries the renewal?

Add the people who fund, authorise, sponsor, use, approve, or resist the engagement. Unknown is a valid and useful answer.

Methodology and limitations

The coverage strength score is a transparent planning heuristic. It considers required-role coverage, relationship depth, recent meaningful contact, support, decision authority, and evidence fit. Buyer and sponsor coverage require meaningful formal authority. Missing required roles, single-thread dependence, stale executive access, and unmanaged detractors remain hard warnings even when the average is healthy.

This tool does not predict renewal probability. Titles do not prove authority, a friendly relationship does not prove budget, and a mapped person may still change their position. Confirm roles directly with the client.

Stakeholder coverage FAQ

What is stakeholder coverage in a consulting engagement?

Stakeholder coverage means having working access to the client roles needed to understand value, sponsor the mandate, make the renewal decision, support delivery, and complete commercial approval.

What is single-thread risk with a client?

A consulting engagement is single-threaded when its continuity depends on one client relationship, even if several people receive updates. Add independent working relationships across authority, sponsorship, and operations.

Who counts as the economic buyer, sponsor, and champion?

The economic buyer can approve or fund continuation. The executive sponsor gives the work authority and removes senior blockers. The operational champion uses or advocates for the work in day-to-day operations. One person may hold more than one role, but that concentration still creates continuity risk.

How many client stakeholders should a fractional consultant know?

There is no universal number. Coverage depends on roles, not contact count. A small client may have three people covering every role, while a complex client may need several relationships across business, finance, procurement, and delivery.

What should I do if my client sponsor leaves?

Treat the mandate as exposed. Confirm interim authority, identify the new sponsor and buyer, transfer the value evidence they need, and avoid assuming the previous agreement will carry forward unchanged.

Is this a CRM or a generic stakeholder map?

No. It does not track all contacts or place people on a power-interest grid. It tests whether one fractional engagement has the authority, sponsorship, advocacy, commercial path, evidence access, and relationship depth needed for renewal.
